1886 - July 2 - Former Tombstone lawman Virgil Earp is elected the first constable of the village of Colton, California. He is in good company. His father, Nick Earp, is elected justice of the peace in the same election. Despite the loss of the use of his left arm, the result of an attempted assassination in Tombstone in December 1881, Virgil proves to be a stalwart officer of the law and respected by the citizens of Colton. Virgil's house still stands today at 528 "H" Street in Colton.
